John's Zorn Moonstone Project

Personnel:
Joey Baron:
Drums
Trevor Dunn:
Bass
Mike Patton:
Voice
Marc Ribot:
Guitar
John Zorn:
Alto Sax, Piano

One hell of a lineup if you ask me. This is some mean joe green, napalm death-type shit. For those of us that have been lamenting the loss of new music by John Zorn's seminal Naked City band, JZ has been doing his best to fill the void with his Moonstone Project, starting with Moonchild: Songs without Words in May of 2006 &
Astronome a couple months later in the same year
, Six Litanies for Hellogabalus in 2007, The Crucible in 2008, and now the most recent installment of this serious and challenging series of work having just been released with
the name that I find ridiculously difficult to pronounce: Ipsissimus. While I did the right thing and purchased this cd throughiTunes, **as I do with all Tzadik releases, I am posting everyone a link to another blog generously providing a d/l link somewhere around the middle of the page for you to get a chance to listen before you buy, as this is definitely not everyone's cup of tea. Check it out here: http://alltimegreatesthits.baywords.com/2010/10/11/john-zorn-ipsissimus-2010/

** So, please indulge me a quick rant here... As I am probably one of the biggest lovers of the Tzadik label and truly appreciate it's music and do everything I can to spread the good word about it's more than anyone else I know, I just want to voice my frustration regarding it's current state of digital distribution and put a quick plea out there to the all-knowing and all-powerful gods of the internet to somehow find a way to reconcile whatever differences there are that have caused Tzadik and eMusic to stop working with one another. I can honestly say that the label's 3-4 new releases they put out each month could justify an eMusic subscription for me alone and correspondingly
eMusic's pricing model is so much better suited for Tzadik's material as so many of their releases are obscure nuggets of widely disparate and eclectic sounds, textures, and melodies that are easily as often a miss than a hit, if not more so and are therefore much more worth the risk at eMusic's average of $.50 a track as opposed to iTunes' $.99. Whatever, somebody please just do what you can. Let's try and find that win-win-win people. I'm just saying...

Anyway, back to the music. For those inclined to dig a little deeper here and anyone wanting to find some new jams to make your ears bleed to, I've come across a couple other links in my online travels that offer some more comprehensive Tzadik previews and listen-before-you-buy action. One such page is here: http://ichosemusic.blogspot.com/2009/01/projects-of-john-zorn.html and another is here: http://zornography.blogspot.com/. You may not always find all of zorn's work rewarding but it'll be damn hard to just remain indifferent to it. so go ahead and take the time to check out as much of this music as you can handle. I'm daring you Billy!
